Kash, Our Border Collie-Aussie Mix is Fast
But the coyote was faster! Kash, being part Border Collie and part Australian Shepherd is not only smart, but I thought VERY fast. Yet, when seeing Kash take off through the woods after a coyote, and watching just how much of a blur the coyote was, it was no contest.
I think Kash could hold his own with one coyote, but often there are more. They have killed most all of the rabbits we used to have, but not the squirrels. There used to be a LOT of rabbits until the yotes came in. Even the wild cats we used to see have disappeared.
At 65 pounds of speed and muscle, he would give a good ripping to a 35-40lb coyote, if he had to. He would probably rather play with it, romping around in the woods, chasing each other.
Every day we feed the birds and squirrels sunflower seeds. I say to Kash, “time to feed the birds”, and he waits by the door for me. I open the door and out he goes, right to the big metal garbage can where we store our sunflower seeds. Then it’s off to the bird feeder to fill it up. We have a lot of birds that feed here every day.
Is there an optimum food for Border Collie-Aussie dogs? If there was, what would it be? What would the protein to carbohydrate percentage be? I have often wondered these things, as I know a bit about dog foods.
We feed our dog Blue Buffalo Chicken w/Brown Rice dry food. That is what he has been fed since we brought him home. He is so darn healthy and vibrant, I don’t know if I would change. We do feed him homemade dog food occasionally, we got the healthy dog food recipes from a ebook we bought online. I highly recommend this book if you want some good homemade dog food recipes and even healthy dog snack recipes.
One more thing today. If you have a herding dog, or a collie type dog, and are about to buy some heartworm medicine, ask your vet about the recent findings that some herding dogs can be adversely affected by the ingredients in the heartworm medicine. I asked my vet and she was surprised that I knew about it, as it has just been discovered not too long ago.
Well, get out there and play with your dog,
Thomas and Kash
